High Quality Traineeships To
Support Business During Economic Recovery
Media Release - 29 December 2009
For businesses across Australia looking to take advantage of the economic recovery, traineeships offer the opportunity to grow their workforce and make an investment in skilling the next generation of workers. This is supported by a new study that identifies the qualities of high-quality traineeships according to Skill360 Australia, the nation's foremost industry-based not for profit provider of apprenticeship and vocational training services.
“Traineeships provide people with a start along a new career journey and also gives them with a sense of self-worth, a contribution that shouldn’t be underestimated during times of higher than normal unemployment,” said Troy Williams, Chief Executive Officer of Skill360 Australia.
Conducted by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), the study also noted that traineeships provide benefits for employers, giving them a competitive advantage that allows them to better retain and attract staff.
“This is consistent with advice that Skill360 Australia has received from local employers. Businesses that make an investment in the training of their own staff generally have better staff retention rates and enjoy all the benefits that come from a workforce that has been trained in accordance with in-house policies and procedures,” Mr Williams said.
Industry-relevant training complemented by current learning resources prepared by trainers with good industry knowledge was also a feature of high-quality traineeships according to the study, something supported by Skill360 Australia which supports a growing number of trainees in the hospitality, retail, business administration, retail and engineering sectors.
“When we select professionals to deliver courses to the trainees that Skill360 Australia supports, we place as much emphasis on current industry knowledge as we do on the ability to teach and assess skills,” Mr Williams said.
The NCVER study also recognises the contribution of Group Training Organisations, such as Skill360 Australia, makes such as providing the information and support that employers and trainees need to sustain a good working relationship.
“This is what Skill360 Australia is all about, working with local businesses and trainees so that each understands what’s expected of them and how to ensure that both the employer and trainee benefit from the arrangement. We provide mentoring support to the apprentice and work with the employer to complete the complex government forms, payroll management, monitor the apprentice’s performance and managing their training,” Mr Williams said.
