Skill360 Australia - Sustainability Commitment
No area more reflects Skill360 Australia’s leadership that in its commitment to environmental sustainability – by 1 October 2009 our employment and training services will be provided on a carbon-neutral basis.
Skill360 Australia was the first Group Training Organisation (GTO) in Australia to seek to have its business practices accredited against the ISO14001: Environmental Management System international standard.
In 2008 the company set a new benchmark when it appointed a Carbon Footprint Officer, challenged with the task of reducing Skill360 Australia’s carbon dioxide emissions. In early 2009 the new Chief Executive Officer, Troy Williams, struck out and committed Skill360 Australia to something no other GTO had done, commit to being carbon neutral. To this end, Skill360 Australia has:
- Committed to a six-monthly audit of its carbon emissions;
- Commissioned the installation of wind turbines, photo-voltaic solar cells and solar hot water at its offices and training facilities;
- Increased its purchase of ‘green power’ from electricity retailers to 100% of total use;
- Commenced the phased-replacement of its vehicle fleet from large six-cylinder cars and trucks to hybrid (Toyota Prius) sedans and small diesel utes;
- Used GreenFleet to off-set carbon emissions from its vehicle fleet and the privately-owned employee’s cars;
- Implemented a policy that mandates the use of carbon off-set options offered by airlines;
- Off-sets carbon emissions from energy use and transportation that can not be otherwise reduced.
This was not an easy decision for Skill360 Australia, representing a cost of approximately $1,300,000 over the initial five years which has not been passed on to clients, however as Mr Williams was reported as saying it “was the right thing to do”. However, Skill360 Australia’s policy has a number of benefits for clients, including:
- Demonstrating international best practice in aligning with a provider of employment and training services that was carbon neutral.
- Allowing companies that are concerned with minimising their carbon emissions to attribute a zero contribution insofar as their relationship with Skill360 Australia is concerned.
Skill360 Australia’s commitment to being carbon neutral is only part of the story. It augments a number of additional initiatives in the area of environmental sustainability that include:
- Use of either recycled paper or paper sourced from suppliers that have Forest Stewardship Council certification;
- The use of rainwater tanks for use on gardens at offices and training facilities; and
- Recycling of all paper, plastic and metal waste generated at offices and training facilities.
Significantly, all of these measures are subject to stringent independent audit as part of Skill360 Australia’s certification under the ISO14001: Environmental Management System international standard.
