Andrew realises his career goal in mechanics!

Undertaking a two-week, Skilling Queenslanders for Work program which focussed on employability skills for the Warehousing industry, Andrew was hopeful in finding employment. Out of the workforce for some time, Andrew’s real career passion was mechanics, but he figured it couldn’t hurt to gain some workplace-ready skills through the Warehousing program. It turns out that decision paid off!

Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) is a Queensland government funded initiative to skill-up job seekers and prepare them for the workforce.  Program mentors and industry trainers work with participants and industry employers in the region to offer eligible participants hands-on work experience, skills development and the opportunity to prove themselves for any work opportunities. In Andrew’s case, the mentor worked with him to ask him about his employment goals, prepare his resume and support him through the program.

In a short period, spurred by his enthusiasm to find employment, Andrew was offered four job opportunities within five days! One of these positions was a full-time job offer in mechanics – so not only did Andrew find himself employed again, but in a role he was searching for.

Andrew said of his experience in the program, “I haven’t received support like this before and I am very grateful to have someone on my side.”

Program Manager at Skill360, Kristie Kelly, said “The Skilling Queenslanders for Work programs offer participants insights into specific industries but so much more than that, including valuable skills that employers are looking for. These include work ethics, teamwork, cooperation, communication and presentation. When we match participants with employers, we know they are job ready and enthusiastic, so it’s a win-win for employers and jobseekers in our region! In Andrew’s case, a short brush up of skills coupled with his enthusiasm to secure employment, has meant he has achieved his career goal – we know he will excel and wish him all the best in his new role!”

Currently there are Skilling Queenslander for Work program opportunities for jobseekers to participate in construction (offering a 20-week paid traineeship), customer service and admin, warehousing and more! Find out more about our current Skilling Queenslanders for Work programs.

Skill360 is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO:1607) and a part of The BUSY Group, an Australian community organisation offering employment, education, health and training programs to support individuals with their careers and businesses with their human resourcing needs.
