At the recent BLA Careers Expo, a major annual jobs expo in Cairns (held this year on the 29th August), Cairns Regional Council staff were impressed with skills shown by their business trainee cohort who took on the job of organising and managing the Cairns Regional Council stand. The trainees are all undertaking their Business Administration qualifications through Registered Training Organisation, Skill360 (RTO:1607).
For the five trainees, Bella, Asha, Lilli, Ebony and Allie, their studies must be paying off as kudos was given by their supervisors for their planning, organising and management of the Cairns Regional Council stall at the expo.
Bree Knox, Employment Pathways Officer at Cairns Regional Council, said of their efforts, “I want to express how impressed I was with this year’s Careers Expo project that was run by some of our business trainee cohort. The expo is attended annually by over 4,000 school students as well as members of the public and is an important event for council to attend in terms of attracting our future workforce.
“From day one of the project through to yesterday’s debrief, the trainees’ enthusiasm, commitment and momentum for a successful event never wavered. I was extremely impressed with their theme ideas (tropical vibes – bright and colourful), a booth layout to finalise details of how the booth will work, and the high level of project support documentation that was created (risk assessment, tasks/delegations, tracking, debrief, rosters) allowing them to track and monitor progress. The use of this information will assist next year’s 2025 trainee cohort to deliver on their project too.
“The feedback that I have received about the way they represented council on the day has been outstanding. I also know that the trainees have been able to use some of the work that they created throughout this as workplace evidence to support their units of competency on their training plan!
“I was privileged to witness their growth during this time in terms of their communication skills (written and verbal), leadership skills, project management skills, participating effectively in a team, organisational and record management skills to name but a few!”
