Struggling with chronic pain issues and out of work for some time, Chloe was feeling disheartened with her job search efforts. That all changed though when the opportunity to be part of a Skilling Queenslanders for Work program at the Wacol RSPCA facility came up. Chloe, jumped at the opportunity!
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work program is an initiative of the Queensland Government and Skill360 is contracted to deliver a variety of programs across Queensland. Partnering with community organisations and local employers, the programs offer real on-site working skills and many also offer accredited training for a variety of industries including construction, logistics, business administration, hospitality, retail and more. Some of the programs also offer a paid traineeship during the program. Upon graduation, participants are marketed to employers and many then move onto employment and start their career paths.
An animal lover, Chloe really enjoyed being a part of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work program held at the Wacol RSPCA. During the 20-week program she undertook a Certificate I in Business Administration but also learnt valuable workplace skills including teamwork and communication. Impressing the staff at the RSPCA, Chloe is now continuing her traineeship and is employed as the business and retail assistant, looking after the retail and gift shops as well as performing administration duties.
Chloe is now looking forward to her next chapter, stating, “Before starting this project, I had no real direction in life and had very little hopes at a happy, successful future. I had been dealing with chronic pain issues for the last four years and didn’t know how I was going to find the drive to get back into the work force. I always knew what I wanted to do in life just never really knew how to achieve that dream since I wasn’t very good at school due to my Aspergers and had been out of work for so long.
“I was at the point of ‘what’s the use in trying?’ when I received the opportunity of a lifetime through Skill360. Through my mentoring sessions and guidance from the mentoring team in this Skilling Queenslanders for Work program, I gained the confidence to pursue my dream career with the RSPCA. The sessions reminded me of what I was capable of when I really put my mind to it; they helped me to sharpen my skill set and teach me skills I didn’t know I needed when it came to the workplace. Thanks to the whole team at Skill360 I have realised my true worth and that I am capable of anything I put my mind to!”
Kristie Kelly, Skill360 Program Manager for SQW said, “Chloe is a great example of a job seeker participant who may have entered the program with little confidence or direction but graduated with confidence and purpose! It has been fantastic seeing her growth and we wish her well in her new position with the RSPCA.”
