Overview

The MSF30322 Certificate III in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology equips you with the practical skills and technical knowledge to build, install, and repair furniture and cabinetry. You’ll learn to use hand and power tools, interpret plans, create production drawings, and work with modern manufacturing techniques, including computer-aided design. This qualification prepares you for a career as a cabinet maker or furniture tradesperson, combining hands-on experience with industry-standard practices.

School-based students who aren’t enrolled in years 10,11 or 12 may be eligible to enter a school-based traineeship. For eligibility, students are required to have exceptional circumstances to warrant consideration, along with meeting all other requirements, including being of an age where it is legal to undertake paid employment.

Equipment Requirements

Each trainee needs to supply their own paper, pen and calculator, along with personal protection equipment (PPE), Including;

  • Safety glasses – These must be worn at all times whilst working in the workshop or on-site
  • Protective Footwear – Preferably safety toe cap
  • Long Sleeve High visible Shirt – Or employer may provide one
  • Ear protection

These are essential to successfully fulfill your role and meet the WH&S requirements.

What You'll Learn

Workers with this qualification have tradesperson-level skills in the manufacture and/or installation of products, including furniture and cabinetry, made from timber and other materials.

They have core skills in tool use, measuring, drawing (including computer-aided design), interpreting work documentation, preparing cutting lists, communication, teamwork, and safe and environmentally sustainable work practices.

Learn to safely select, use, and maintain hand and power tools for furniture making tasks, following workplace health and safety standards.

Develop accurate production drawings by hand and using CAD software, including dimensions, materials, and assembly details.

Interpret design plans and create precise cutting lists to support efficient manufacturing processes.

Gain skills in measuring materials and performing calculations for accurate cutting and assembly.

Understand and apply information from plans, specifications, and job sheets to complete tasks correctly.

Learn strategies to reduce waste and energy use, supporting sustainability in the workplace.

Develop effective communication skills for collaborating with team members and supervisors.

Work cooperatively with others to achieve quality outcomes in a cabinet-making environment.

Students will be expected to complete 17 elective units over the course of Cabinet Making and Timber Technology.

MSFFM3026 Produce angled and curved components using manufactured board

To produce at least 4 curved components using manufactured board and at least 2 angled components using manufactured board:

  • Design documentation

MSFFF2012 Prepare surfaces for finishing

  •  Three surfaces to prepare including internal and curved surfaces (solid hardwood, solid softwood, MDF, veneered board, metal)

  • Surfaces to be prepared
  • Tools, equipment and consumables required for the surfaces being prepared
  • PPE
  • Workplace procedures, manufacturing specifications, codes, standards, manuals, and reference materials.

MSFFM2017 Hand make timber joints

  1. Joining tools and equipment required to choose and make appropriate joints, including 4 different joint types and 2 types of adhesive, using only handheld tools while undertaking:

o box construction

o carcass construction

o drawer construction

o frame construction.

MSFFM3042 Fabricate cabinetry

  • Work documentation
  • Tools and machinery required to fabricate cabinetry products including at least 2 of the following:

o floor cabinet, wall cabinet or tall cabinet

  •  At least 5 of the following to be fabricated:

o End panels, shelving, benchtops, backs, bottoms, doors and fixing rails

MSFFM3043 Install cabinetry

  • Installation of each of the following types of cabinetry at least twice, including at least one run involving three different cabinetry types:

o Floor mounted

o Wall mounted

MSFKB2003 Prepare for cabinetry installation

  • Preparation of two different cabinetry installation jobs on separate sites

Duration & Delivery Mode

We expect students to complete their apprenticeship within 48 months (4 years). However, it’s expected the duration will be within 42 months (3.5 years).

Course Deliverables & Specifications

Delivered under the Australian Apprenticeship Program, Skill360 requires applicants to be a minimum age of 13 years old to undertake this training opportunity. You must be employed in an apprenticeship to participate in this training program.

School-based students enrolled in years 10, 11 or 12 may be eligible to enter a school based apprenticeship.

You must have proficient English language, literacy and numeracy skills to engage effectively in learning and assessment.

A substantial amount of your learning and assessment will take place in the workplace, allowing you to apply your skills and knowledge directly through on-the-job experiences. These practical components are supported by access to our online Learning Management System (LMS), where you can:

  • Access all course content, learning resources and assessment tasks
  • Submit assessments and track your progress online
  • Communicate with your trainer and assessor for ongoing support

The course can be completed in a full-time, part-time or school-based capacity. During specified block release periods, students are released from work to attend structured training sessions, providing focused learning and assessment opportunities to strengthen practical skills.

This flexible delivery model combines hands-on workplace experience with online learning and structured support, ensuring you develop the technical skills, knowledge and confidence required to succeed in the cabinet making industry.
